On the Cover of the Oklahoman

a note from Muriel Fahrion

FYI: Just in case you don't get the Oklahoman Newspaper, Strawberry Shortcake, Medicine Park and I made the front cover. My friend Pegi Brown called me this morning to let me know. On our daily dog walking and trek to the Post Office we snatched the last copy from the newspaper box. Julie Bisbee is the writer, interviewer. She not only created this article but also came down for the Christmas caroling. I usually face articles written about me with trepidation but Julie did a superb job. She selected some of the more fun parts of the interview to quote. Yes, and she divulged my age too but I gave her permission to do so. (Thanks to Candace McCoy for helping me be a fit 62). I liked the photograph of me drawing because it showcases our view of the mountains and Park. (I hope you got to meet Julie when she was here, she's a delight, but if not I know we will be seeing her again.)

So, dear reader, I like to think of it as scoring one for the Park.

Medicine Park Bridges the New Year

by Muriel Fahrion
2007 is now just “water over the bridge” and things, as things do have changed in the Park. Our little town is going through some transformation. Neighborhoods (although no way official) are starting to emerge. There are the Creekside, the Heights (Forest Road) etc. the Vine (streets off Westlake), Outer Eastlake, Big Rock & Water St., and new developments of the Woodlands and Granite Ridge. Yet Medicine Park is still a compact enough that in a week we will have covered it all in our daily walks. From last night’s New Year’s Eve gatherings and today’s get-togethers I have gotten acquainted with several new neighbors and neighbors to be: Gene, Magda, Vickie, Mike, Dave, Katy, Steve, Sean, Amanda and others whose names I will have to ask when I see them at the Post Office. Unlike other places I have lived where people were transferred in and did not always have a choice, Medicine Park is home to people that made a mindful decision to live here, because of the location or the culture or some unknown draw. I believe it is this factor that engenders the community with such vitality and intrepid positivism.
How does one keep from "growing old inside"? Surely only in community. The only way to make friends with time is to stay friends with people…. Taking community seriously not only gives us the companionship we need, it also relieves us of the notion that we are indispensable.
-- Robert McAfee Brown
In 2008 that bridge, that we watched in disbelief submerge in the flood waters of 2007, will receive a face lift to take on the traffic that will cross it every day …. to pick up the mail, or pick up the trash, drop by for an ice cream cone, a glass a beer, a chicken fried steak, pizza, a glass of wine, to listen to the band, catch an art show, enjoy the Wagon Camp, take a dip, catch a fish or just to walk on the other side to change our point of view.
