The First Bite at the Buffalo Bistro

as reviewed by Muriel Fahrion
photos bigrockkworks

Medicine Park is becoming a mélange of eateries from the scenic Riveside to the newly reopend historic Old Plantation and the soon to be open Master’s Kitchen for Pizza and Pasta. But there are days you just want to step away from the chicken fried and the huge steaks and go for something little different. If you had ever attended a art show where chef Anna Banda provided the creative appetizers or treated yourselves the all chocolate Valentine Day dinners at the Winery of the Wichitas you will have some clue to what I am talking about.

Don’t bother changing out of your summer casuals just stop on up to the Buffalo Bistro for that quick bite. Or order a bunch of things and you’ll quickly fill up. The day we came up fish tacos were on the menu. I am fish taco kind of girl. The last great ones I had at Pesky's Baja Grill in St. Augustine. The Buffalo Bistro’s catfish tacos with chipolte is definitely in the running. Of course it was accompanied with nice Winery Chablis. Michael went for the generous Caesar Salad but he particularly liked the crab and corn chowder with smokey bacon. Michael’s favorite dessert has to be coconut cream pie so how could he resist and yes, we asked for two forks so I could taste as well. Served in a custard dish the pie was very coconutty and with fresh whipped cream, the real deal.

Patty Hill, congenial restaurant manager, brought out a meatloaf slider while we talked to owner Marty Hazelwood, just looking at that yummy sandwich we made a mental note that we had to try it next time. In fact the slider is quickly becoming one of the favorites on the menu. The Vinny, a funky grilled peanut butter & honey sandwich with carmelized bananas was being raved about by another diner. So I think you are getting the idea, fun innovative cuisine with something to tempt most anybody. A stop by for Parkies and easy to get to for folks from Ft. Sill, Lawton and Elgin. Worth the trip for our friend in Texas and visitors from OK city.

Enough said now stop by the Clark Brown Creative designed website for Buffalo Bistro and download the menu. CLICK HERE

Gearing Up for the July 4th, 5th & 6th

Just in case you have been out of town, out of the loop or out of touch there is going to be one whopper of a celebration in Medicine Park on the July 4th weekend. Check out the schedule in the right-hand column. I for one am gearing up memorizing lines for the Medicine Show and gathering pieces and parts for my wardrobe. Doing the Medicine Show in July temperature but still in period dress needed some serious searching for lightweight but convincing outfits. For the July 4th Old Fashioned Picnic which is one of the special events for the townfolk to celebrate it is highly recommended that you dress in period outfits. Obviously with Medicine Park history spanning 100 years that could mean stuff from any decade, Edwardian, Flapper, Jazz age, Swing era, the nifty 50’s whatever. And don’t forget that old fashioned picnic lunch and bring a covered dish to share. Medicine Park Business Association & VFD has been very busy planning plenty of fun and games for kids and adults. So put on your favorite era outfit and come celebrate.

Saltfork Crafters & MP Fire & Police Barbeque

THIS SATURDAY, SATURDAY!
2 RED HOT EVENTS IN THE PARK
Artistic Blacksmiths at Town Center.
Larry Morefield, whose work can be seen
and purchased at the Cobblestone Forge
and also at the Old Plantation, is hosting
the gathering of the Salt Fork Crafters.
These craftsman and women are keeping
an old time traditional craft alive in Oklahoma.
Amazing to watch.

Barbeque Benefit Medicine Park Police and Fire
While your there treat yourself to barbeque for a donation to the Medicine Park Police and the Medicine Park Volunteer Fire Department. We are lucky enough to have hightly qualified men in both departments. Randy (the guy who keeps the fire trucks in good condition) said that the fire department has gone from averaging 30 responses to now over 130 per year! Although their main duty is to the town of Medicine Park they are they to assist on any fire in the local area as well as accidents. As first responders they constantly updating their skills with the appropriate classes offered by the State and county. We are proud of the job that our forces do but fully understand that equipment needs to repaired and replaced. So enjoy the barbeque and help at the same time.

That Was the Day that Was

as reported by Muriel Fahrion

You might like to hear that there was three major events for Medicine Park and they all came off without a hitch.. But since Parkies are known for rolling with the punches and are always clever enough to take the lemons they are being pelted with and making lemonade no one would have guessed anything was amiss.

The Park Tavern Raft Race
The Park Tavern Raft Race had its spills and thrills with just enough capsizing to keep the crowd laughing. Who could resist the cleverly concocted rafts created by the Copes and Ellises. Animal house raft oared by Mark Ellis and Mayor Cope with it’s knock apart cake that becomes the Sigma raft was hilarious. Many became infatuated with the raft that was Gilligan’s Island. It seemed Ginger and Movie Star (Shelley Cope and Jennifer Ellis) kicked the men off the island and floated about just being the beauties that they are. I say congrats for all those who tried especially the first timers. However Mark & Dwight and Lee & Mike Hibbetts battled it out for the first. Lee and Mike in their water snake raft named the Indigenous took the honors. Maybe you saw it in person or you could have caught it in the paper or on the news. Start building your raft for NEXT year now.

Chance McQuacken© the Rubber Duck mascot of the 5th of July Rubber Ducky Race was dry ducked because of the high winds. The sitting duck was surrounded by well wishers. Odus Hennessee, Charlie Wright (with ducks on the head) and Ed Stonerock who had hatched the plan and constructed the 9 foot duck stood by proudly for photo ops. I wore my duck pajamas in pride. Be sure to buy your chances to benefit the winner and the Medicine Park Fire Department. 2 Bucks 1 Duck…..5 Bucks 3 Ducks.

The Marauder’s & Medicine Show in Frederick
Then the race really began in earnest as Lee Hibbetts lead the Medicine Park Marauders and Medicine Show down to Frederick in 96º and 30mph winds to celebrate the ride of the Abernathy boys. The plan was to arrive en masse but one of our vehicles was waylaid putting Lee Hibbetts into her Super Hero role as Director Marvel. She rearranged the skits to fit the late arrivals. I dropped a line or two but then I wrote my part on Wednesday so I’m working to forgive myself. However my Bumblebee song was stingingly stunning. Mark Somerlot a seasoned Marauder made his successful stage debut as Mr. Boggs. The stuffed Possum, the understudy for the snake in the bag, took the stage due to SOMEONE forgetting the snake. I guess you could rename us the Sweat Equity Theatre. The show must go on! Bringing it all back home for performances on July 5th and 6th so catch us in the act!

Elaine Lovett’s Art Opening at the Winery
Meanwhile back in the Park, Elaine Lovett’s opening at the Winery of the Wichitas had an overwhelming turn out. Michael landed back in the Park at 7:30 still wearing our Marauder’s outfits. If you haven’t seen it you MUST. Her new group includes paintings that are bigger than she is. My favorite was Pink Houses a real Midwestern impressionistic slice of life. Kudos Elaine! The show is up for the next month so stop in.

Note: We managed to snap a few shots of the raft race before our camera ran out of battery and we ran out of time. Anyone wanting share their best shots with the Park Posts would be appreciated and acknowledged. Please email. Thanks
