The BIg Chill: Polar Bear Plunge 2012

The weather is unpredictable. You could be breaking through ice or it could be just a swim in the Park. Having a good time however is a sure thing . This isn't just another ICY plunge. It is a party. Gathering of jumpers and encouragers of all ages. All meet at 2:00 or before by the Tavern and paraded down to Bath Lake over the little walk bridge to the jump off area. at the sound of the whistle the jump begins and then its back to the Tavern for refreshments with a live performance of the Soul Survivors and big talk of braving the cold waters.

It doesn't get much COOLER than this!

Medicine Park's New Barcode Business Card

50% of the cell phones in the United States are now smart phones. Among the things that a cell phone can do is read barcodes. These barcodes can lead you to a description of a product on the Internet but they can also be used to take you to a website. Using this idea as a jumping off point Michael Fahrion designed a new business card which incorporates a bar code that when scanned will take your cell phone to MedicinePark.com expressly designed to work perfectly with cell phones. MPEDA gave the go-ahead and the new card has been delivered to Townhall. These new business cards are an inexpensive but efficient way of getting tourist and visitors to the town's website with its events, shops, and restaurants. Barcode Scanner is a free downloadable app available to all types of smartphones.

You can take it for a spin now. Download the barcode scanner app (if you haven't already) then scan the image of the business card barcode.

Bath Lake Has Been Restocked with Trout

What’s better than great weather and being in Medicine Park? Its being in Medicine Park with your favorites fishing rod and reel in going after trout! Medicine Creek has just been stocked again with trout. Come out and enjoy the weekend or just the day. You can pick up fishing gear at Gone Fishing Bait Shop. Before or after your day of fishing you could stop at one of our eateries and browse our shops. Special trout fishing permits are required and can be purchased at Town Hall or at the Ice Cream & Candy Shop. Cost as indicated: $5 for the day, $15 for the week or $25 for a year.

CHILI COOKOFF - Park Tavern- Saturday Nov 5

I can almost smell the amazing ingredients wafting through the air. This is the no ordinary chili cook-off. First there is NO charge for tasting or for participating. (Check out the rules on the Park Tavern website.) Then to have Blue Print there for live music makes it even more fun.

The variety of chili's are amazing. I try not to miss this fun event and shouldn't either. Plenty room outside for people to enjoy the creek side view. And the weather forecast says sun and a pleasant 67 degrees. See you there!

It with heavy heart that I must let the Southwest Oklahoma community know of the death of Randy Hansen.

This is from his beloved daughter Amanda on October 10th….

“To all my father's friends - My father, Norman Hansen, left us all this morning way too soon. He was a great father and even better grandfather to his grandkids”.

Memorial Service will be held at Big Rock Chapel, Medicine Park, 7:00 PM Tuesday October 25.

Randy Hansen, as we knew him, was an active and loved member of the community. Some knew him from his work as a Medicine Volunteer Firefighter and immediate responder while others as one of the most loved Medicine Park Marauders, DOG. Children would line the streets just to catch a glimpse of his outlaw character and then begged to photographed with the coyote hatted outlaw. If his acting seemed too casual during rehearsals in the Perils of the Park or the Medicine Show it was for sure in the show he could deliver the lines with aplomb and deliver the laughs with gusto.

The ol’ fishing hole knew him well. He could be spotted with his line cast in Medicine Creek during trout season. He had a spontaneous personality always ready with words of humor or words of comfort whatever was needed at the moment.

He loved his family most of all. Randy traveled often to be with his children and grandchildren, sometimes to the Northwest other times to Florida. Another favorite place with close friends was Taos New Mexico where would work but also relax. While he was away, Medicine Park the folks who live here, were never far from his thoughts and messages.

The 3rd Annual Medicine Park Flute Festival managed to persevere as much needed rain fell putting a dent in attendance for the event. Even so, there were folks who donned their wet weather gear and with umbrella in hand enjoyed the musical talents of Rae Denton, Erich Graywolf , Dennis Lauglin, Myron Beeson, Larry Evans, and many more. Headlining the event were Joe Young of Boise, ID and Mark Holland of Saint Louis, MO who entertained using a variety of flutes demonstrating a wealth of musical talent. Reed Alder secured and coordinated all of the performers during the weekend.

VIP Tom Ware displayed his art and flutes and performed briefly Saturday afternoon on the Main Stage. Now living in Anadarko, Mr. Ware has indicated he will be back in Medicine Park off and on to perform and lecture at the Branded Bear. This talented musician regaled many with his stories of touring, appearing in movies and the days of the Blues Nation. Rumor has it that he is getting the band back together, due to popular demand.

The Fallen Branch Flute makers conducted a workshop on Friday preceding the performances and several vendors sold flutes during the two days. Traveling from Missouri this friendly trio is well know among players many of whom use their phenomenal instruments which are crafted literally from fallen branches they find in their treks through the woods.

For those who missed the Flute Festival this year, stay tuned for dates for next year's event. Those involved are looking forward to another great lineup in 2012.

As most of our readers know Medicine Park was hit with a devastating fire on June 23rd and 24th. Fortunately the historic downtown was not impacted. Now a month later the residents that had sustained damage are picking themselves up from the ashes. They are having work done on their places, cleaning, restoring, tidying up while some folks, that sadly lost their homes, are making plans for building new homes. From personal experience it is a tough road to go being wakened by the sound of hammers tapping on our chamber walls in the wee, not so hot, hours of the morning. But we are pleased that our dedicated team of restorers are working so hard to get us back to where we were before the fire. Ft. Sill and insurance companies have been out to assess the damage. The U.S. Forest Service are visiting with the people who have had their land scorched informing them know how to avoid erosion after the fire. Note: You must call and make an appointment to have this done.

In Town Center several houses have been and are being erected over the foundations of the original cobblestones in keeping with the vintage look of the Park. Other places not on the original foundations are being built with a look appropriate to the town's history. Planning and Preservation reviews plans for all new builds and historic restorations.

Center Stage on East Lake has been given a finishing coat of sealer a reminder that the Mayor's Blues Ball is not too far off. Meanwhile Bath Lake is busy from early morning to late at night with locals and visitors taking cooling dips. And we are still here to walk our dogs along the beautiful Charley Wright Creekside trail.

Deborah Rizzo Karaoke Owner Passes Away

Deborah Claudia Rizzo passed away Sunday, July 17, 2011, in Lawton.
Medicine Park got to know Debbie from her Karaoke business but she soon made many friends in Medicine Park because of her outgoing, fun loving, personality. Debbie was known to volunteer whenever she could to help the community.
Our sympathy goes out to her family and friends.

She was born July 9, 1956, in Paterson NJ, to Sergio Joseph Rizzo and Minna Winter. She moved to Oklahoma in1992 her then husband Tom (they later divorced). She was a talented singer and owner of Rizzo Productions Karaoke from 1995 until her death. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends. She also enjoyed singing and taking care of her animals.

She is survived by: her father: Joe and his wife Bonnie, Hilton, NY; a son: Donald and his wife Linda, Dayton, OH; a daughter: Angela and her husband, Billy, Elgin, OK; a sister: Tammy, Rochester, NY, seven grandchildren: one great-grandchild, many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. And two "special sisters" Cynthia, Medicine Park, Ok and Pam, Fletcher, Ok. She was preceded in death by: her Mother: Minna; and her two brothers: Frank and Peter.

Memorial Service will be at 11 AM, Thursday at The Chapel On The Rock in Medicine Park. Get together following the service at Les and Dora's on Rte 49. Covered dish to share would be greatly appreciated.

One of Medicine Parks most loved citizens, Larry Morefield, passed away Tuesday morning. Among all the hats he wore his favorite, undoubtedly, was the cowboy hat he donned as outlaw Slim in the Medicine Park Marauders. He was one of the founders of the group and remained the heart of the Marauders for over 10 years. In his profession he worked as director of radiology at Grady Memorial but he will be remembered for so many other things: his love of God, family, community, history of the old west, his artistry in blacksmithing and his belief in hard honest work. I have dedicated this post about him though his life deserves a book.

The secret to the Marauder’s appeal is in the part that each Marauder plays in the skit being acted in the street. Larry was the master of serendipity. When you saw that twinkle in his eye and he said, “I have an idea” you knew he had hatched another delightful original scenario that would have people breaking up with laughter. He was also most agreeable to ideas that sprung off his, as he was known for saying “That’ll work”. You’d be crazy not to take part in his hi-jinx. He stayed in his character of an uneducated but street-smart outlaw to the delight of the audience and his fellow players.

“Give us Direction; the best of goodwill; Put us in touch with fair winds. Sing to us softly; hum the evening's song. Tell us what the blacksmith has done for you”. ~ Jethro Tull (March 30, 1674 - )

Larry Morefield was a member of the Salt Fork Crafters, a group that keeps the old art of blacksmithing alive. When I was designing for my Will Roger’s dimensional artwork it was Larry who said he would create the Roger’s miniature branding iron. He was commissioned to create tables, pot racks, candlesticks and more. Authenticity was important to him as he built western wagons and added his forged iron works. He won awards for his work and was known all over the Southwest for his ingenuity and mastery of the art.

“Its not what you put on your head and feet that make you a cowboy…. its what’s in your heart.”

There were a thousand acts of friendship and generosity that Larry never bragged about. He did demonstrations in blacksmithing and answered questions from the onlookers and paid special attention to the curious young. When my husband was diagnosed with cancer it was Larry that helped him understand what lie ahead in chemo treatment. As any of the women that played in Marauders will attest he was there to help them get up on the wagons or tote anything that may have been heavy, he was a gentleman cowboy and yes even presented our director with flowers for producing a great show. And he had a subtle way of herding Marauders when they needed it the most. Ask anyone who knew him and they will tell you a story of what Larry meant to them.

Our hearts go out to what he treasured the most, his wife Linda, their children, Jay and his wife Tammy, Natalie and her husband Ray, Heather and his grandchildren.

Medicine Park Fire June 23rd- June 25th

The very good news is that old historic town center remained unscathed. But in other areas of the Park like the area near East Lake and the Route 49 Y and Big Rock Estates, weren't as lucky

By now you have read, heard or watched news about the fire. I am not here to give a complete report on the fire only to report on it as Park resident. My husband, myself, our dogs and our house are survivors. We live on Big Rock. At approximately 8:00PM Thursday Rod McKee, Medicine Park's, chief of police knocked on our door to tell us to evacuate NOW! Rod and his officers in fact went to every house with the same message. The fire was raging toward us emanating from Ft. Sill. We did just that, grabbing medicine, dogs, a change of clothes, cellphones, dog food and computer. As we ran out the door ashes were falling like snow. We left the rest behind, a life time of art, family treasures, collections and the like. It became a raging fire especially on Big Rock. Fire was on both sides of the roads. Houses were surrounded by fire. 25 different Fire Departments joined in the fight (approximately 200 firefighters), and it was a house to house fight. The temperature was 104º and wind gusting around 40. After we got the all clear to return to our house on Saturday morning, we stopped at the gas station. It happened that a Meers Volunteer Fire Department truck was there at the same time. We thanked them and found out they were part of the team that kept our house from burning down. It reminds us that Southwest Oklahoma and beyond are there for the little town of Medicine Park and vice-versa. When we spotted David McCoy, Medicine Park's Fire Chief we thanked him and the other MP Volunteers for the amazing work they had done.

Houses and trailers were lost but no lives. But so many more could have been lost if it wasn't for the firefighter's amazing work. As we took refuge at a home of friend we were constantly being informed of what was going on thanks to Lee Hibbetts and Candace McCoy coordinating the dispersal of information at Town Hall. Friends all over Park and Lawton kept us in the loop when they could. Visually Thursday night we could have sworn that nothing could have been saved on Big Rock, in fact all but 2 houses on the Rock were saved. Friday morning we got the news that our house was still standing. The land is charred on all sides, but nature, given enough rain, will bring it back to life.

Our hearts go out to those who lost their homes and want them to know your friends in the Park are there for you.

The very good news is that the center of the old historic town dating back to 1908 remained unscathed.

(Buster and Sandy lost their home in the FIre) They are trying to prepare a trailer and should get there in about a week. I'll find a place for the things until they are ready. The Baptist Church of Medicine Park is also taking donations that they will disperse to those needing assistance after losing their homes from the Fire.

Mrs. Chadwick's Bakery & Coffee Shop

We all have visions for Medicine Park. Many of them have been fulfilled. One hope was that we would have a coffee shop in town but now we have something better than that Mrs. Chadwick’s Bakery located in Town Center. Opening the Red Dirt Festival weekend this family owned and operated actual bakery has Mrs. Chadwick baking and Mr. Chadwick and son serving. You know it before you even walk in the door. Promises of delicious bakery treats waft out the doors. Mrs. Chadwick will be there everyday mixing up from scratch bake goods. To go with that is several choices of coffee which has been custom blended by a company in Texas especially for Mrs. Chadwick.

This morning we stopped in and had one of Mrs. Chadwick ‘s cinnamon rolls right out of the oven. They are full 7” in diameter. I chose a caramel mud slide coffee, Michael went for the house blend. We both agreed it was good coffee. They also carry juice & soft drinks for those non-coffee drinkers. And the cinnamon roll (Mr. Chadwick’s favorite) was as good as it smelled. Mrs. Chadwick has been supplying her pound cakes to many Oklahoma eateries but you can savor a piece right from the source. There were also huge cookies, blue muffins, bunt cake and more. There are places to sit a spell inside as well as outside.

Currently they are opened on the weekend but starting June 13^th Mrs. Chadwick will be in store baking and selling her sweet treats. She’ll be opened by 8:30 AM to start your day.

New Businesses Opening in Medicine Park

Some think of it as progress I think of it as returning to what Medicine Park was meant to be, a small but unique Oklahoma Tourist Town destination. Continuing the revitalization of the little shops are two new editions. Situated right next to Town Hall, Medicine Park Grease Monkeys (opened this Spring) is fun little shop with array of classic car and old timey OK gift memorabilia. And directly across from Bath Lake in a building that was originally the Lawton Railway station/ Medicine Park Post Office is the Bait Shop, opened just a week ago. Edna Hennessee Passes

Edna Hennesee passed away 11:30 PM, March 22, 2011.
If you have spent any time in Medicine Park or Lawton you would have met Edna Hennessee and once having met Edna you would always remember. Personality plus with a keen insight into business as well as people. Her generosity seem to have no bounds. Medicine Park has benefited from this generosity. We extend our sympathy to her son Odus Hennessee, vice mayor of Medicine Park, his wife Jessica and their children and grandchildren. Our sympathy goes out to her granddaughter Jennifer Ellis (president of Cosmetic Specialty Lab) her husband Mark and their family. And to all grandchildren.
Service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Lawton on Friday at 2:00.

"The Great Train Robbery" Comic Book Just Published!

The Medicine Park Marauders will be a signin’ their new comic book on Saturday, March 19 at starting at 1:00 pm. We be corralled at the Cobblestone Doghouse Shop in Medicine Park fer this here event. (Between Town Hall and the Bridge) Best be a watchin’ fer a gunfight or two!

Based on an actual train robbery event by the Marauders which was put on by the Southern Kiowa County train ride. The comic book is still just $5. It features all you favorite Marauders, thanks to our local photographers, artists and advertisers.

There are a few issues left of the first Great Stagecoach Robbery still available. The Marauders will be happy to sign either edition.

Park Stomp Adds Another (Musical) Note to Medicine Park's Events

Who knew it would be so much fun this weekend and that the sun would shine again on the Park. Mayor Cope did have some idea of how perfect Blue Grass music would be for Medicine Park after all he lined up the bands after hearing them (several of them under the MudStomp label) at a couple of venues. The tone was joyful from Bands on stage and from the audience listening and watching. I got to see and hear them all. It got folks up & dancing. It was seriously fun music. Ireland's Call (from Limerick Ireland) though not blue grass was an early St. Patty's day surprise. And I had my favorites but I have to say it was all good. But I want to thank Ireland's Call for the Jig sent out to me. For some it may have been the first time hearing the washboard being played both Ben Miller Band and Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy Band or the rare uilleann pipe made by Mickey Dunne not to mention the washtub base. Deadman Flats stood and delivered with gusto to the stomping in the Ben Miller Band weekend. I really dug the gravely voice of Jarrod Starling of Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy Band. The accordian added into the mix for the Whistle Pigs. And oh that fiddler Rachel Ammons of Tyrannosuarus Chicken, amazing!

ATTENTION PARKIES: Oitas Owen Seigler (A.K.A. O-Dogg) was pronounced dead at approx. 2:15 this morning. I would like to thank all of you for for being the family and friends that you are. He was proud to be a part of your community.

Medicine Park is more than cobblestones, it is also the people that make up this town. Owen was an integral part of what makes Medicine Park the fascinating place it is. You may have noticed the restoration of the gate coming into Medicine Park the stones that make up the post were skillfully put into place by our own Owen Seigler. Even if you have never heard his amazing laugh and sat and talked with him you may know him by the work he has done. So many of Medicine Park’s buildings and walls have had his touch. Owen grew up in Medicine Park and Lawton, OK and was always proud of the fact.

We of the Park send our sincerest sympathy to Owen's family.

Yes the kiddos and adults lined the streets of Medicine Park to catch the parade lead by the Medicine Park Volunteer Fire Dept and Medicine Park Police Force, the Comanche Police and Mayor Cope on his bike. There was shining example of Model A Ford. The Antique Tractor Club all decked out was back by popular demand. McQuacken the 12 ft. Duck waddled down the parade root. The Carolyn & Jerry's inflatable float carried a passel of little adorable tikes. The Marauders aboard the Medicine Wagon threw chocolate loot and shot a gun or two and gave a hoot. Our local clown scooted in and out in his little car. And last and best was jolly old Santa Claus with the lovely Mrs. Claus. Afterward anxious children lined up to let Santa know just what they wanted for Christmas.

Las Montañas Mexican Restaurant

Las Montañas is Spanish for "the Mountains". The perfect name for a Mexican Restaurant that has just opened in Medicine Park. After hearing several thumbs-up reviews from locals we decided to go out for lunch. The interior is a bright tomato red and sunshine yellow, a very pleasant look. The wait staff aims to please and was right there to take our order. The expected chips with salsa and cheese dips were delivered post haste and refilled instantly when they were low. Both the dips were tasty although I would have preferred a more substantial chip for scooping. We order from the lunch menu. We chose chile rellenos with beef, chicken fajitas and chicken flautas. My large single flautas came with guacamole, sour cream, beans and rice. I asked them to hold the cheese just because some restaurants use to much for my taste. I thought it was good and the rice was tastier then I have had at other Mexican eateries. My dining partners cleaned their plates. I was able to sneak a taste of chunky salsa that came with the chile rellenos. I will make sure I get my own serving next time. Our bill came to under $20 for the three of us. (We chose just to have water with our meal).

The new comic book, The Great Train Robbery, is well under way. It will be jamb-packed action thriller based on the the Medicine Park Marauder's Snyder Oklahoma Train Robbery. Owen Siegler at the VA Hospital

I just received news from Albert Mackenzie that Owen Siegler has been hospitalized for the last 2 weeks.

Owen grew up in Medicine Park and Lawton, OK and is proud of the fact. Owen is also a Viet Nam vet. (thanks Owen). Sadly now he is very ill and is in the Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma City where he is slated for surgery sometime next week.

But before he has surgery what he needs from us, the folks who know him and the work he does and the story he tells, are notes and cards with our well wishes and prayers. This is your chance to make a difference to let him know we are thinking of him. A kind word goes a long way in helping heal.

We are excited. Munoz is an experienced restaurateur offering a variety of Mexican fare as well as American classics. It’s been 3.5 years since I started the Medicine Park Posts. I didn’t realize until last month that I was nearing the 200th post. Generally it is not a hard to do, coming up with ideas to write about. Medicine Park, OK was after-all named one of the top 10 Coolest Small Towns in America. This is not hype, believe me. I, along with my husband and dogs, have been a Parkies now for 8 years and are avid fans of all things MP. Not as many people would have noticed this exclamation point in the Wichita Mountains in 2002. Medicine Park has survived ups and downs in popularity through the decades. The town’s new positive persona took the involvement of those who believe and those who get-it-done. The turning point to the new shinier Medicine Park began back in the 1990’s but the last 8 years has seen several amazing changes as well.

They have finished hand quilting an attractive applique quilt with a Southwest Native American theme that is up for raffle. The tickets are only $1 why not improve your chances and buy several tickets. You can get your raffle tickets from Rita Lee at the Laughing Lizard Trading Post or pick one up at the Community Center. The drawing will be the last Friday of this month during the Country Music Night at the Center.

That's the caption under a picture we have of Medicine Park taken in 1921. The last 3 days the operative word here was "Play". Live Music played from 1:00 PM to 11:30 PM. With talent coming from our home bands, near dear bands from around Oklahoma and Texas to internationally known stars. All I can say is that ones who have played the Park before had stepped up their performance several notches and it wasn't just me saying this. What more authentic blues could you ask for when you have Dennis Binder adding to the Soul Survivors. Yes I have my faves, the local guys for sure, Blueprint (love the edition of the keyboardist) and the Usual Suspects but who could not resist getting up to dance with Chant? Chant loves the Park and the Park loves them back (triple amazing guitar work BTW). Great to see Malford Miligan back, what a showman. My first time hearing Wes Jeans leaves no doubt why they have a big following. And that crazy kid Kayla Reaves sang as if she was channeling Janice Joplin, wow! I know it took a lot of pull and a lot of work from our mayor but to have the blues queen, Janiva Magness up there surrounded by instrumental talent, sending blues vibes through night air is something that I will not soon forget.

Food vendors and artists, craftmen lined the streets with people going in and out of our special shops. And the weather gave us days that were pleasantly end of summer with breezes. While swimmers took a dip in Bath Lake. Yes, Medicine Park, a place where everything seems to happen at once.

I personally want to thank the Coolest Mayor in Oklahoma, Dwight Cope! Yes, and all those Cool Donors who believe in the Park. The movers and groovers that helped the town shine for the event. The bands and musicians who gave everything up on the stages. And finally those who came and filled the streets to experience the "Playground of Oklahoma".

Now that you read my post, do the town and Mayor a favor. Go the Oklahoma Arts Council and let them know much you enjoyed the experience.

Richard Smith died August 14th at his home in Texas where he had moved a few years ago to receive treatment for cancer. He lived in Medicine Park with his wife Rae Nell Causseaux on Big Rock Rd. It was not unusual for musicians and friends to gather at their home to jam or work out the tunes on the guitar. He played in the Medicine Park Marauders and in the Medicine Show as well as adding his Kentucky style of playing to the background. He would join in gatherings at the Park Tavern and at the Winery adding the blue grass/ country sound of his voice and his guitar to the night. He was a man of strong faith in God and a trust in the human heart.

From Elaine Funk Lovett ~ The spirit of our dear friend Richard Smith passed from this earth on Saturday night. His service is tomorrow Aug. 17th 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at Mulkey Mason Funeral Home in Denton Tx. The address is 705 Locust. I know he had many friends here in The Park who will feel a loss in the passing of this kind and gentle spirit.

"The Artists of Medicine Park" Exhibit at the Redlands Community College Fine Arts Gallery in El Reno, OK is now open. The exhibit features works by Tom Biggs, Patty Ferguson, Clark Brown, Michael Fahrion, Elaine Lovett & Denise Wynia-Wedel. The exhibit will close with a reception on Sept. 24th, 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m. Tom Biggs will also give a watercolor demonstration on Sept. 24th from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit and events are free and open to the public. The exhibit is open M-F 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Remembrance of Arthur Tuck (AP)

I knew AP as an acquaintance but more as an integral part of Medicine Park. He ran AP's Club which provided spirit refreshments and refreshment of the spirit. I was also aware that he gave back to the community by hosting benefits for MP Volunteer Fire Department as well as folks needing a helping hand. ~ Your Editor

I asked Carolyn Riley a friend, that knew him well, to do write a little remembrance.

As I'm sure you all know Arthur ( AP) Tuck passed from this life on July 8, 2010. He spent a good part of his life right here in Medicine Park. Through good times and bad he always gave an effort to improve our town . I met AP in 1969. And good, bad or indifferent he introduced me to my children's father.

What some of you do not know is that AP's sister was my mother in law and the grandmother of my children. I have memories of AP, that are not familiar to most of you. The family get togethers for dinner, canasta and dominos (a big deal with the family) or the large family reunions. The times with Granny (AP's mother) and then her illness and passing. My mother in laws illness and passing. So we all have different memories of the same person. He will be sorely missed as a part of my life, A part of my family that will never be the same because of his passing . The experience of helping Ursula with his care is not anything I would have missed. I feel we did the best we could to make his last days comfortable. And formed an even stronger bond with Ursula, I am proud to tell you she is my friend just as he was my family. Carolyn Riley

The Wichita Mountain Area Senior Citizens is hosting the Evening of Country Music at the Medicine Park Community Center this Friday (remember,its the last Friday of every month). We want all of you to come and enjoy the food and the music. It is a fun time! I have attached the flyer that we post around the town. If you will, please send the flyer to other people you know who might enjoy spending Friday evening with us. We look forward to seeing you there.

Walking through town with the dogs lately reminds of Richard Scarry's BusyTown so much going on. The final stone tables have been added to Santas Snack Shop, the final logs have been added to the front of the stage, the final cobblestones are painstakingly being set in place on the McCoy development Town Center shops. The McLains have a new stone wall added to their already natural landscape. The McCains, the Biggs and the Straleys asked that I might mention the Sqyres Brothers, Rockstar Masonry as having done an excellent job for them. I don't mind a bit since it cements as it were the vintage natural look we want Medicine Park to keep.

Unlike many towns where people go back and find that their memories of it were better than the present we want folks to find to their delight that the town maybe even better than their memories.

If you were here for the the Mayor’s Red Dirt Ball you would have noticed a stage that seemed to appear overnight. It in fact took many man hours to build but was done on rather short notice. It served it purpose well. What wonderful Red Dirt celebration and good news there’s more live music to come at the Mayor’s Blues Ball, Sept 3rd, 4th and 5th. (Schedule you accommodations NOW!)

You’ve noticed (or you will soon) that the Park is adding to their already amazing eclectic shops and lodging offerings. But while doing that they are keeping the town’s historic look and charm.

Open since Spring 2010 the The Old Plantation Inn right in Town Center with 20 quality accommodations (bringing back the times when the Apache Inn stood in the same place) just a hop, skip and jump from shops, eateries and Bath Lake.

Charley & Ellie Wright are having the finishing touches Santa Snack Shoppe put on their beverage, hot dogs and snow cones place with walk up window adjacent to Bath Lake in the Historic Spring House dating back into the beginnings of the Park. You’ll appreciate the natural stone benches where you can sit and have your refreshment.

And just in case you were wondering what happened to the scrumptious Medicine Park Ice Cream and Candy Company they will soon take up their new digs in the shops being built by McCoy Development. The Branded Bear, a Native American gifts and craft store will also occupy another one these shops. These building constructions are new however you will note that the McCoys have incorporated many charming vintage details including cobblestones and round topped doors.

This year the Marauder's did not have a beer booth letting the Marauders be citizens of the Park and enjoy the wonderful music offered up this year on 3 stages. Robert Dean famed sculptor, resident of Medicine Park passed away this morning February 16th 2010. The long locked, vivacious artist/sculptor/musician has left his earthly studio. Always with a work in progress, always with another idea on the drawing board, he lived life to the creative max. He will be missed in so many ways. Missed hugely by his family, his community and by his many friends. I can think of no more fitting tribute then to repost one I had written about his works that can be seen in Medicine Park.

The first thing most people notice in Medicine Park is usually the Creek with Mt. Scott in the backdrop, then the cobblestone buildings including the Old Plantation. And then you start noticing the amazing sculptures that dot the Medicine Park landscape. Many of the pieces have a familiar feel about it. And well they should. They are the creations of one, Robert Dean, our sculptor in residence, whose work has found it way into private collections as well as purchased for museum collections. He manages to capture the nature and essence of each animal he sculpts which is extraordinary considering he constructs in metal, a seemingly not very pliable. The first creature to grace Medicine Park was the Bison in front of the Music Hall. Robert Dean offered at a fraction of what it was worth in order to keep it in the Park, a place he loves. The then Music Hall owner, Jeannie Clinton (an artist in her own right) bought it. Robert Dean continued to offer residents the opportunity to commission a sculptural piece to grace their land at a special “Medicine Park” price. It is his vision to showcase his work in a Sculpture Park, Medicine Park. And for that we all benefit.

Stroll through the Park and give yourself a visual treat there are no less than 16 sculptures created by Robert Dean all owned privately and yet visible from the sidewalk or road. Please keep in mind that all are on private property and they are for your visual delight, please respect the residents property and do not walk on their land or touch the art work.

Our Medicine Park hometown Christmas was quiet this year inside while a raging blizzard banged at the windows and rattled the doors and yet, if you were like us, you were left awestruck at the blanket of snow left on the doorstep Christmas morning. Once the winds stopped howling Michael ventured outside with the camera and took some photos of this once in life time event. We wanted to share with you the hauntingly beautiful winterscape that was the record Christmas Eve storm.

Special thanks to those with 4 wheel drive that took upon themselves to see if the town folk were safe and warm and could get mail and food supplies in they might need.

Nora & Paulette Win the Chili Cook Off

The sun danced through the autumn colors and band Blueprint was in fine form sending cool notes over the red hot chili competition. There was enough wind to keep the Chefs on their toes to keep the flames going. 25 competed and every lick of chili was gone before it was all said and done. (Even my Spiced Cider Gelatin disappeared). Nora and Paulette of Medicine Park took first place. It was the 3rd time they had won over a span of about 11 years, even with a new bunch of judges. They're just that good, face it. Everyone of the chili's I tasted were different but so delicious!

You’ve taken the sweaters out of storage and turned on the heat for the first time since April now it’s time to turn up the heat in Medicine Park. So strap on the apron and fire up those creative juices, The Park Tavern is hosting once again one of the most competitive sports known to Medicine Park, the Chili Cook-off. Last year new contenders where thrown in the mix with the well seasoned competitors. What does it take to win? Good creative cooking and secret ingredients. Meat is the only ingredient that can be prepared before coming but the rest of the zest and ingredients must be added on site either in a crock pot, slow cooker or your portable grill. Plug ins available on the outside veranda.

Cooking begins at 12:00 and the judging is at 5:00 November 7th. Judges cannot be influenced no how, no way. They’re a group with gifted palettes and know how to pick a winner. Sign up at the Tavern or email Bill at the Tavern to sign up or ask questions. Yes and there is PRIZE MONEY! ($50 for 1st place) but worth more is the official BRAGGING RIGHTS. Invitation is open to anyone from anywhere.

Not a chili cook? You are needed. Someone’s got to eat the chili and praise the cooks. (Side dishes, salsas, cornbread, muffins, tortilla chips are welcome). Blueprint Band will be on the stage adding its own kind spice to the pot.

Masquerade Ball Halloween

Halloween Night: The Medicine Park Music Hall was the venue. Music by the Brothers Dupree were in top form. Loved the sound. And the party goers were dressed in amazing costumes. Personally I had a great time stayed until the last. Here are pictures of some of the attendees.

Note: I understand the party at Les and Dora's on Friday was loads of fun too. Sorry I couldn't attend because of health reasons however if you have pictures you want to share please email me.

Charley Wright Receives Honors

We had a fine gathering as Lee Hibbetts, presenting for the town, read the plaque commemorating the Charley Wright Trails and unveiled Charley's likeness by sculptor Robert Dean commissioned by the Town of Medicine Park. Mayor Cope spoke in behalf of the town congratulating Charley Wright. Charley thanked all who work so hard to create the Trails; among them Odus Hennessee and Ed Stonerock, and Candace & David McCoy (for donation of the land). He mentioned the beginning effort in conjunction with Paul Fisher. Charley, not forgetting the work done by the inmate program, noted that some after their release, bring their families and point with pride to what they have been a part. Cameras snapped as people shook hands and Charley posed with his supportive family. A twenty-one gun salute followed provided by the Medicine Park Marauders.

The Trail has now been enjoyed by untold numbers of residents and visitors, as to almost take it for granted, but it took the vision and dedication to that vision of one Charley Wright to "get it done". Let's come together to celebrate the amazing feat and say thank you in person.

Oklahoma City, OK – Mayor of Medicine Park Dwight Cope will be honored by Governor Brad Henry at the 34th Annual Governor’s Arts Awards. Mayor Cope will receive the George Nigh Public Service in the Arts Award that recognizes an Oklahoma government official for outstanding support of the arts.

Yes, Dwight spearheaded major live music events, Red Dirt Ball and the Blues Ball, in Medicine Park. He did by bringing in the talent, and by enlisting cooperation and help of his friends and neighbors, not to mention the patience, love and support of his family. It was his goal as Mayor to bring music to the Park and Southwest Oklahoma and he has done just that and now has received well deserved State recognition!

The Marauder's Captured on Camera

Medicine Park Marauder's website has a new feature, Captured on Camera, a place where visitors and townfolk alike can post the pictures of them, their friends and family along side the Marauders. Upload is as easy as clicking a button. Be sure to add the date and names if you wished them published. As Little Britches of the Marauders I get to meet Medicine Park guests from all over; Germany, Guatamala, Mexico, England, Hawaii, Korea, Japan and Texas to name a few. If we are doing photo ops now we can also see the final pictures when our visitors upload them to the site.

Wow, wow and wow again. So much music so many happy visitors and locals digging the music and totally enjoying the Mayor's Blues Ball and all the performances. It is very IMPORTANT now that the Mayor and his team get photos that document the event and feedback to complete his report for the Arts Council Grant. It is marvelous that this event remained FREE of charge but that took Art Council Grant, terrific sponsors and dedicated volunteers but now photos and feedback are needed to complete this report. This editor (AKA Little Britches) had the opportunity between photo ops and gunfights to hear all but one of the bands today starting with Blueprint featuring Mark Somerlott singing the blues and wailing with his harmonica, young Kayla Reeves with her powerful and bring it home blues, (missed Three Legged Dog because this Marauder was catching a break before the shootout at 5:30) Rusty Trawick Band with great instrument improvisations, and ending with John Gaar & the Hopeful Souls with Malford Milligan wrapping up the this Saturday's blues in wonderful.

Speaking for Medicine Park and thousands of its guests all I can say is

Barbara Redmond, known to many of us in Medicine Park as Graceai, passed away August 9th. She was born in Delaware. Her two childeren are a son Aaron and a daughter Laura. She also has two grandchildren she adored, Jessica and Shawn. Her husband Bill (deceased) and Graceia lived in several places in OK but found a true home in Medicine Park. They were founding members of the local SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) Graciae was the founding baroness. Bill's love for her was so enormous that it filled her heart and spilled over to her love for others. She loved with all that she was. She was the truest friend I've ever had. ~ Karen Elsworth ... 101 and Still Having Fun

So many things happening at once, that was the 4th. You may have spotted me playing Little Britches shooting up the streets with the Medicine Park Marauders or chatting with the folks in town or trying to catch a little of the music between acts or chilling out on the Tavern veranda. After 7 years as a Parkie I am still in awe of how a little town of about 400 can pull off such a fun filled event.

Let face it, thank yous are meaningful to the people being thanked but can be a bit redundant to those reading so I am going skip naming names because I would assuredly miss somebody. I will do my best however spreading the thanks.

Thanks to the media for giving the Medicine Park celebration coverage.

Thanks to the Volunteer Fire Department for serving up hotdogs with the fixins until there was no more to cook.

Thanks to 8 Marauders in 3 acts robbing a bank, getting caught, thrown in jail, breaking out of jail, blowing up an outhouse (with the Floozy still in it).

Thanks to the Floozies for selling the Marauder Comicbooks.

Thanks to our photographer for capturing the moments and staying out of the way of the action the best she could.

Thanks to the volunteer bartenders of the Short Branch who sold beer to enable the Marauders to buy bullets.

Red, White and Blues in the Park

Repairs are being made, sidewalks power washed, vegetation trimmed back, making ready for the big 4th of July celebration. Medicine Park on it’s 101st birthday is acting like the kid it’s always been. On tap will be great music, this year’s headliner is nationally recognized, Curtis Salgado, blues artist. Back by popular demand are two hometown favorites: Blueprint (blues and rock) and the JuJu Beans (Rockabilly, blues) Lawton, Ok. Medicine Park Marauders have loaded their guns and have put together a 3 act production with an explosive ending. The Short Branch Saloon concession proceeds benefits Medicine Park street theatre and arts. And it wouldn’t be the 4th without Charley Wright and the Great Rubber Ducky race. Chance Mc Quacken the 8 foot mascot will be there as well. Proceeds go to help Medicine Park events and services. Stop by the Fire Department and get yourself a hot dog or hamburger with all the fixin’s for a donation. And of course fireworks!

And can you believe it is still free! Many man and woman volunteer hours have gone into preparing for the event. Come celebrate with us.

Medicine Park Welcomes Time Travellers

Walking over the bridge I pass a man peering into Medicine Creek as if it were a mirror reflecting back to earlier days when he fished along the shore, jumped off diving rock and zoomed down the toboggan slide into the cool of Bath Lake. Medicine Park is more then a weekend retreat for many folks it is a step back in time.

Recently I received a most pleasant email from Bob, one of those time travelers. He had been stationed at Ft. Sill for 9 weeks of artillery training in 1967. Bob and his young bride Susan took up residence in the Green Leaf cottage. That’s right, one of the renovated group known as the Green Leaf Cabins now renting in the Park. Back then a it was more on the rustic side but it served them sufficiently for them and loved the setting. He sent some slice of life photos of he and his wife back then. He kindly gave me permission to share them with our readers.

I was pleased to inform him that the Green Leaf Cabins and like many of Medicine Park historic cottages and cabins still welcome folks for weekends and more extended stays.

Unlike some places from our past where we return to only to be a little let down, most find that Medicine Park’s beauty has not faded and it continues to beckon you to come play.

Note for you car buffs Susan and Bob no longer own the 1965 Mustang but wish they did.

The Red Dirt Ball Rides into the Sunset

First ever Mayor's Red Dirt Ball struck a great cord with the crowd. Mayor Dwight Cope's vision it is about bringing live music to the Park and keeping the Park a people welcoming, family friendly place. Friday night we (as Marauders) got to listen to the bands but Saturday we and our Marauder sidekicks spent our time at the Short Branch Saloon selling beer to support our acting troupe. We sent our daughter (Tulsa Kim) out to capture some impressions of the goings on.

She snapped musicians, music appreciators, flower girls from a wedding, swimmers, arts & crafts booths, face painters, shoppers, barbeque at the firehouse and folks enjoying beers and general merriment. And thanks to Lulabelles photos we can show even more.

If you made it I'll bet you'll be back for the Mayor's Blues Ball. If you missed it (I'm sorry) but make sure you don't miss the Blue's Ball Labor Day weekend or for that matter the 4th of July birthday bash.

See you May 22nd Friday Night and Saturday May 23rd afternoon and evening. Great music and fun in Medicine Park!

To add to the fun a jam session will be set up at the Park Tavern stage on Saturday.
